The home of Ulysses S Grant – 1860

American History

By Lisa Hawk

Special post for today. As we have been exploring the historical sites of Galena Illinois, we found these pieces of original furniture in the Ulysses S Grant Home. The original fabric on these pieces of furniture is “horse hair and silk” woven into fabric that was very durable.

Several of you who have been to our sewing shop have heard me explain that the stiff pieces on the bottoms of formals used to be woven of real horse hair. And, today it is made of plastics.

So, here is another example of real horse hair being used in the textile industry.
